As a qualified Stonemason with years of heritage building experience I am able to undertake a variety of specialist Lime and Stonemasonry works.

Stonemasonry

From stone walling, Cornish hedging, stone repair/replace to specialist building works and heritage building restoration.  All works carried out vary so please call to discuss your project. The common thread between all my work is that I will look holistically at your project to conserve the integrity of it.

I have worked alongside specialist builders and architects, project managers, English Heritage, The National Trust,  Landmark Trust and a variety of conservation officers to help bring projects to life.

Lime Pointing

Thanks to its unique construction, lime mortar allows moisture to evaporate from the joints more effectively then its modern counter part cement. This makes lime pointing ideal for managing moisture from our damp climates in Cornwall and Devon.

Lime mortar protects the stone around the mortar joints, as it is softer then cement. This helps maintain the fabric of your building.

Lime Plastering, Lime Rendering & Tadelakt

Why Lime Plaster or Lime Render?

Fundamentally buildings need to be able to breathe, particularly in damp areas like Cornwall and Devon. When incorrect (and often modern) materials are used, moisture becomes trapped which may cause issues like damp and mould. Over time these may lead to extensive and costly building repairs.

Lime plaster and lime render allow your building to breathe whilst offering protection. They help regulate indoor humidity and aids your property in managing moisture which is of huge benefit in our South West climate.

Whilst working with the build team at Mike Wye in Devon, my understanding of lime as a material was  further enhanced especially with regard to specialist applications such as Tadelakt plastering. Tadelakt is a waterproof lime based plaster mostly found in traditional Moroccan Architecture but now used to create stunning bathrooms and wetrooms. It has a beautiful (tekter) finish which is achieved by the extremely time consuming task of “closing” the plaster by hand with a two inch polishing stone. There is an optional finish of adding wax following this.

Help to maintain the integrity of your building by using lime plaster or lime render, applied by specialist tradespeople.

Cob wall repairs and Cob rebuilds

Cob is made from a mixture of materials but mostly subsoil, clay and straw. Building with earth has been happening for thousands of years however there has been a recent renaissance of using the material due to its green credentials. The high thermal mass of cob make it very energy efficient, not to mention the lack of toxic ingredients within the material eliminating any potential toxic emissions.

Cob repairs may be required for a number of reasons; rodent infestations, masonry bees, incorrect (often modern) materials such as cement or gypsum surrounding the cob or weather erosion. Each situation is so unique so if you require a cob repair or rebuild please get in touch.
